The journey of the Hippocratic spirit in the countries of the world continues with the initiative of the Global Doctors’ Hippocratic Institute, under the auspices of the Athens Medical Association. A recent destination was Bucharest, Romania, where President George Patoulis and the members of the Board of Directors of the Institute, in a special event, placed the bust of Hippocrates, the father of medicine, in the courtyard of the Motza Metropolitan Hospital, in the presence of the Rector of the University of Bucharest, Zinga Viorel. In fact, the Rector invited the President of Athens Medical Association to place the bust of Hippocrates at the University of Bucharest Carol Davila next October.
“The university is always open to such initiatives that promote and develop knowledge,” said Mr. Viorel and congratulated the Greek delegation for its initiative. He added that a delegation of doctors from Bucharest will participate in the original Hippocratic Oath at the event to be held in Kos.
The Global Doctors’ Hippocratic Institute began with the first placement of the bust of Hippocrates at the Medical School of Larissa, where Hippocrates taught and died, and will continue with the placement at 35 medical schools around the world.
“Hippocratic thought is more relevant than ever. We will work to spread around the world the valuable legacy left to us by the father of medicine,” he said in his address at the end of his speech. He noted that “the Global Doctors’ Hippocratic Institute, in collaboration with the Athens Medical Association and the Region of Attica, had undertaken a number of important actions and initiatives that serve the ideal of reviving and spreading Hippocratic thought and ethics around the world.
He referred to the initiatives of the International Health Tourism Center and described the objectives of the Global Doctors’ Hippocratic Institute, including the creation of educational programs on Hippocratic medical philosophy, the linking of medical schools around the world with Hippocratic medical philosophy and ethics, and the development and implementation of activities related to education and training in Hippocratic medicine.
The initiative of placing busts opens new paths and partnerships with doctors and institutions abroad, said the Vice President of the Global Doctors’ Hippocratic Institute, Mr. Pantos. He explained that the Global Doctors Hippocratic Institute is engaging with medical schools abroad to revive the Hippocratic Oath again and lay the foundation for the promotion of Hippocratic thought and medical tourism.
The event was participated by members of the Romanian academic and scientific community, Ambassador Sofia Grammata and the President of the Hellenic American Chamber, Christos Seferis. Also present were the members of the Board of Directors of the Global Doctors’ Hippocratic Institute, Antonios Polydorou, General Secretary, Kostantinos Kouskoukis, Vice President B’ and Fotios Patsourakos, Treasurer via internet connection.
